About Counselors
Suzan Babcock, M.Ed/MIIM
Sue has a M. Ed. in counselor education from St. Lawrence University and a master's in International/Intercultural management from the Graduate School for International Training (SIT). Her areas of professional interest include: individual and group interpersonal relationship counseling, loss and bereavement work, life & career coaching and cross-cultural issues counseling. Before coming to Taiwan, Sue worked with a number of US communities in crisis, including diverse populations, as a community organizer and cross-cultural negotiator.
Kris Carlson, MA/MSW
Kris Carlson holds dual master's degrees in social work and international relations from the University of Denver, Colorado. She holds a bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Maryland, College Park. Kris has 14 years of clinical experience working with children, teenagers, adults and families in both the US and abroad. Kris has worked as a social worker in the US as well as a school counselor at Taipei American School.
Kris' practice includes working with children and their families on such issues as anxiety, depression, learning disabilities, academic special needs, abuse, neglect, cultural adjustment, relationship issues, adoption-related issues, body issues and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Kris uses solution-focused therapy, cognitive behavior therapy as well as play therapy in her practice. She has extensive experience working and living in the expatriate community understanding multicultural settings and working with a wide variety of nationalities.
In addition, Kris coordinates the adoption program at the Community Services Center and has extensive experience both in the US and overseas providing families with home studies, post-placement reports and adoption-related counseling services. As an expatriate adoptive parent, Kris understands the joys and challenges of raising a family internationally.
Fawn Chang, MA/LMFT
Fawn Chang holds a master's degree in marriage, family and child counseling from USC (the University of Southern California). She has also acquired a bachelor's degree in East Asian culture and language from UCLA (the University of California, Los Angeles). For two years, she studied in the PhD program of organizational behavior at CSPP (the California School of Professional Psychology). Fawn has 10 years of clinical experience working with children, teenagers, adults, and families in both the US and Taiwan. Fawn has worked both as a licensed marriage and family therapist and certified school counselor in California. She has also acquired been licensed as a counseling psychologist by the Taiwan Government. Fawn is currently a contracted counselor/ instructor with Taipei City Hall, NTNU (the National Taiwan Normal University), and the EAP (Employee Assistant Program).
Fawn's practice consists of working with children and their families on issues such as behavioral/relationship related difficulties, learning disabilities, academic achievements, cultural adjustment, parenting, and career planning. Fawn uses family and marriage therapy, solution-focused therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, Rogerian therapy and Adlerian therapy in her practice. She has extensive experience working with couples of mixed cultures. She has associated herself with a diverse range of ethnicities and is sensitive towards multicultural issues.
Wendy Evans, MSW, ACSW, RD
Wendy holds a Master's Degree in Clinical Social Work from Michigan State University and a Bachelor of Science degree from Indiana University in the field of nutrition and health. Wendy has more than twelve years of clinical experience and was accepted into the USA Academy of Certified Social Workers in 2000. In addition to being a certified counselor, Wendy is also a Registered Dietician. Her primary counseling interests are helping adults, couples, and teens struggling with issues pertaining to marriage, parenting, depression, anxiety, eating disorders, substance abuse, and emotional eating. Through raising five children internationally, Wendy has a deepened understanding of the challenges of cross-cultural living.
Cerita Hsu, MA/MS
Cerita Hsu is a licensed counseling psychologist in Taiwan. She received her two master's degrees in psychology and marriage and family therapy from Boston University, Massachusetts and Cal Poly Pomona, California. Cerita has clinical experience working with children, adults and families in both the US and Taiwan.
In counseling with adults, she has done individual, couple, and family therapy. Some areas that her work focuses on are in anxiety, depression, emotional disturbance, trauma, substance abuse, cultural adjustment, loss, and family and relationship issues. In counseling with teenagers and children, she has experience working on issues such as fear/anxiety, anger, depression, attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, school adjustment, peer relationship, and abuse issues. She uses solution focused therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, play therapy, and structural family therapy in her practice. Her experience in child, adult, marriage and family counseling covers diverse cultural groups in the expatriate setting.
Perry Malcolm, MSW, LCSW
Perry holds a bachelor's degree in psychology and a master's degree in social work. He maintains licensure in Georgia as a clinical social worker. He has 17 years of clinical experience, the last 9 years of which have been in Taiwan at The Center.
In America, Perry's work experience included working with acutely and/or severely mentally ill persons and their families in settings that included crisis stabilization units, a large state mental hospital, a partial-hospital program, and a residential program for persons with schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder and bipolar disorder. At The Center, Perry continues to work closely, in a broad cross-cultural milieu, not only with persons with depression, anxiety, substance abuse, crisis intervention needs, post-trauma issues and men's issues, but also with couples, families around deepening communication, recovering from infidelities. He takes a respectful approach to counseling, which takes into account the whole person in their environment, where "the person is not the problem, the problem is the problem".
Perry has also taught English in Taiwan from pre-K to adult and currently only teaches medical English to doctors and nurses at Veteran's General Hospital, always with an eye toward sensitizing the veteran's staff to expatriate issues. Further, he attempts to bring sympathetic understanding not only to the special circumstances of English teachers, but also, as a parent in a cross-cultural relationship, to the needs of expatriates in those circumstances. He is committed to social justice, and has interests in depth psychology.
Tina Oelke, MEd
Tina graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree with a teaching certificate in English education. She then completed a master's degree in guidance counseling through Bowie State University, MD. She has a variety of experience working with individuals in educational, university, and counseling settings. Before working at The Center as a child and adolescent counselor, Tina was an international school counselor in Taichung.
Tina's experience includes working with children, adolescents, and their families through individual counseling, small groups, and workshops. Topics include bullying, social skills, self-esteem, depression, anxiety, anger management, transition and adjustment, assertiveness, peer relations, parent/child relations, conflict resolution, organizational skills and stress/time management. She has also provided career and university counseling.
Tina is a member of the American Counseling Association and the American School Counseling Association. She is especially interested in relational bullying, character development, and helping youth achieve a healthy balance in life, school, peer, and parental relations. Tina draws from her own multicultural experiences through living in the United States, United Kingdom, Bosnia, and Taiwan to help her better understand and work with the unique needs of an expatriate community.
Ming-I Sun, MSW, LCSW
Ming-I Sun is a Center counselor based in Hsinchu. Ming-I is an U.S. licensed clinical social worker (LCSW). She is affiliated with the Infant Mental Health Team of the Taipei Psychotherapy Center. She is contracted as a clinical supervisor both at the social welfare departments of the Taipei City and Hsinchu city. Ming-I's specialties include: family relationships, parenting consultation, floor-time therapy for autistic children, child-adolescent developmental issues and infant mental health. She also has rich experience working with individuals who may have difficulties with emotional regulation related issues. Ming-I can provide individual or group counseling services.
