Getting the most out of the counseling experience
Whether you are interested in seeing a counselor at The Center or in your home country, there are a number of important questions for you to consider when establishing a counseling relationship.
When you meet your counselor for the first time it may be helpful to ask yourself the following questions:
- Do I feel I can talk openly and honestly with this person?
- Does the counselor have experience in dealing with situations that are similar to my own?
- Do I feel the counselor understands my reasons for coming in?
After you establish a rapport with your counselor, you will discuss an individualized plan and set goals for your work together. Seeing a counselor is not an indication of weakness or an inability to cope. Often, talking to a neutral party can be helpful in sorting out many of life's challenges. The more actively involved you are in the counseling process the more effective counseling will be for you.
Remember, counseling is a joint process between you and the counselor and each client's experience will be different. If you have questions or concerns about the process it is important for you to talk directly with your counselor. As the relationship continues, it is helpful to give feedback to your counselor about your progress and also let the counselor know if you think your goals are being met. The Center's counseling staff is committed to providing caring and compassionate support to all people seeking services at The Center.
