The schedule for this tour has been changed since the publication of the Center's Activities Catalog. Please note that this website has the updated departure and return times.
This very small volcanic island, or islet, rises out of the ocean off the northeast coast of Taiwan. Out-of-bounds to the public for many years due to typhoon damage, the islet was reopened in the spring of 2021. Keelung Islet's ecology is remarkably unspoiled, despite its proximity to Taipei. On this trip, we will take a train from Taipei to Keelung. We will then share taxis to the Bisha Harbor where we will hop on a boat for a journey through Keelung's busy harbor and across the sea to the islet, five kilometers offshore. We'll have two hours to explore the islet with a local guide. We will visit the picturesque harbor area and the path which follows the shoreline around to the beautiful opposite side, enjoying views out into the ocean and back towards the main island of Taiwan. We will then make our way up a number of steps to see the lighthouse that sits at the highest point of Keelung Islet. After our return ferry trip, we will taxi it back to the train station. Participants' interest and time permitting we may include a stop at the Miaokou Night Market before taking the train back to Taipei. This tour will end on the train back to Songshan Station. Wear sturdy walking shoes; bring your Easy Card for the train, plus plenty of water, snacks and rain/sun protection. There is very little shade on the island, so please bring a hat and something to cover up (long sleeves recommended) or an umbrella. NOTE: There will be water on the boat but there is nothing for sale on the islet or at the harbor. Bring everything you need for the trip. Ferry fees are included. Shared taxis to be paid by participants on the day. Please have small change/NTD notes with you.
