Hike to Nanshan Fude Temple

This moderately strenuous, 10km hike begins at the Nanshijiao MRT Station. The trail is a mix of dirt and paved stone, and not very steep (only about an altitude difference of 220m). The highlight of this hike is the Hongludi Nanshan Fude Temple, dedicated to Tudigong (Chinese God of Earth). There is a huge (about 22m high) statue of the Earth God on the roof with two big dragons on either side. Inside the temple is brilliant. There are several different gods who are in charge of different aspects of life. You can pray for a romantic relationship, good fortune, having babies, etc. But, to get to the temple, you must climb up more than 1200 stairs! This is the real workout portion of this hike. From the temple you will have one of the most beautiful views of Taipei city. Our way down will be on a mountain trail where we will pass by a small, but well-decorated Burmese-style temple. We finish back at the Nanshijiao MRT Station. This hike requires a reasonable level of fitness. Please wear proper hiking shoes; bring water, snacks, and rain/sun/insect protection as needed.
