PLEASE SEE UPDATED INFORMATION ABOUT THIS HIKE BELOW.
After taking the bus from the Jiantan MRT Station we will start this Yangmingshan hike at the Helan historical trail. Along the way we will pass Mount Gaoding, Mount Bei Wuzhi and Mount Shiti and arrive at the beautiful grasslands of Qingtiangang, aka Buffalo Meadow. Qingtiangang (at 800 meters plus) is a lava terrace, just east of Mount Qixing, which was originally used for grazing cattle during the Japanese occupation period. Subsequently, Taiwanese farmers would allow their water buffalo to graze there, but as the animals were needed less and less for farming, they were left to roam wild. After enjoying panoramic views and of course, the beautiful grasslands, we will take the bus back to Jiantan MRT Station.
This hike is about 8K in distance with about 780 meters ascending. We only go up so there is not much descent. The first 1/3 of the hike is a shaded dirt trail and is the steepest part, which then becomes a mix of ups and downs. The later part is stone paved exposed trail. We recommend a reasonable level of fitness for this hike. It is not a difficult hike, but due to the uphill component it is a bit more strenuous than some recent Center hikes. Anyone who is a regular hiker and can manage the uphill climb should be able to do this hike. Also, with the potential for the differing abililities of our attendees, we cannot guarantee the pace of this hike as well as we have with past trips. It is possible that the trip could end later than the posted end time of 2:30 pm back at Jiantan.
