Filial Son, Loving Mother and Putuo Mountains are bizarre whaleback rock formations jutting out of the jungle above the village of Pingxi on the headwaters of the Keelung River. Made accessible to walkers after a former KMT soldier painstakingly cut steps out of the bare rock in the side of each peak, this is one of the most extraordinary and scenic walks in the Taipei area, and one of the most popular, since the ascents were made safer with better handrails. The ascents of all three peaks are safe, very short (each about five minutes), and suitable for all regular hikers, but a good head for heights is essential. Participants can skip one or all of the peaks if they wish, as we return to the same point after each. This hike ends back at the Muzha MRT Station. Suitable footwear with a good grip is essential on this trip. Bring sun/rain protection, plus your Easy-Card for the bus.
